Abstract

To provide a simple, accurate method for estimating battery losses, this paper proposes an empirical equivalent circuit model that could be used for battery system design or energy management. The battery loss model is developed, parameterized and validated using commercial Liion battery cells. The model considers the impact of battery state of charge (SoC), temperature, current rate and direction. Experiments show that the proposed model can accurately predict battery loss with relative errors of between 4.4% and 12.3%, compared to a minimum error of 52.7% if only electrical losses are considered.
