Abstract
This paper presents the results of a numerical simulation study of the behaviour of vehicle impact on different types of columns. The simulations were performed using the finite element software LS-DYNA, which was verified to perform this type of analysis by comparing the simulation results against three impact tests on concrete filled tubular columns, the results of which show good agreement between the simulation and test results. A numerical parametric study was then performed to investigate the effects of three types of vehicles impacting on three types of commonly used columns (steel tubular columns, reinforced concrete columns and concrete filled tubular columns). The parametric study covered different vehicle approaching velocities, different column sizes and different boundary conditions. This paper will present the impact force results and discuss how the impact force may be affected by the aforementioned different parameters considered in the simulations. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group.
