Abstract

The depletion of fossil fuels had resulted in finding alternate energy sources such as biofuels (biodiesel, bioethanol, biohydrogen, and biogas). However, these biofuels are also facing challenges in the preliminary process involved in converting biomass into biofuels such as cultivation, pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. Nanomaterials can be used to overcome these challenges. In this chapter, the characterization, properties, and synthesis of nanomaterials will be discussed. The application of nanomaterials for biofuel production will also be elaborated. In the end, challenges faced in the application of nanomaterials for biofuel production such as toxicity, performance evaluation mechanism and hazardous byproducts’ formation due to nanomaterials will be discussed.
