Abstract

In this study, time-resolved measurements have been employed to understand the complex mechanisms of droplet interaction and breakup dynamics in the highly turbulent swirling flow field. In particular, droplets are injected at multiple locations like vortex core center (VCC), inner and outer shear layer (ISL, OSL) in the swirling flow field. The main aim is to identify how the droplet breakup and the dispersion process altered as a function of injection locations. Time-resolved PIV (~ 3500 frames/s) is employed to perceive the evolution of flow field with and without the presence of droplets. The breakup mechanism and dynamics of droplets is acquired using high-speed shadow imaging system (~ 7500 frames/s). Furthermore, coherence analysis, POD, and FFT are implemented to delineate how the inherent dynamics associated with turbulent vortices in swirling flows results in inhomogeneous dispersion of droplets.
