Abstract
This article’s main objective is to analyze and compare the definition of family in the Chilean legal framework, with a group of families living in different districts in Santiago, Chile through the lenses of the biology versus choice dichotomy. 59 interviews in total were conducted with the same group of people during two separate years. The findings have concluded the existence of a series of gaps and contradictions between family as defined by the legal framework in Chile and family as practiced in actuality which is more diverse than that which stated in the law.
