N2 - In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the witches exacerbate divisions, push ambition through brute force, hierarchy and power; their interventions end in the wicked destruction of leadership potential and human lives. In this blog we draw on a famous line from the ‘Scottish play’ – ‘Like a hell-broth boil and bubble. Double, double toil and trouble’ – as a metaphor to problematise the dominant discourse surrounding school leadership and think through the pressures facing headteachers and the trouble brewing for the school system as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic.
