catena-Poly[dibromozinc(II)-m-ethylenediamine-N:N']: resolution of structural anomalies resulting from the interpretation of vibrational spectra.

    Abstract

    Crystals of the title compd. are orthorhombic, space group Ima2, with a 19.270(4), b 7.2111(17), c 10.025(5) .ANG.; Z = 8, dc = 2.721; R = 0.053, Rw(F2) = 0.151 for 631 reflections. The structure consists of infinite -ZnBr2-(en)-ZnBr2-(en)- zigzag chains. Each repeat unit contains a trans ethylenediamine ligand [N-C-C-N -179(1) Deg], which bridges two approx. tetrahedral but crystallog. distinct Zn atoms. One Zn atom is bisected by a crystallog. 2-fold axis, whereas the other has mirror symmetry. Even though the crystal packing does not allow significant interaction between Zn and N atoms on adjacent chains, it does facilitate extensive intermol. N-H...Br H bonding (N...H 2.69-2.96 .ANG.).
