Caxton in the Middle of English

Research output: Chapter in Book/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Discusses the vexed topic of the shift from Middle to Early Modern English and what can be said about any consciousness of that shift in the period itself (c.1450-c.1550). I use Caxton's treatment of late fourteenth-century English prose works as a test case for evaluating, via a small number of case studies, the early modern sense of medieval archaism in language.
