    Abstract

Language learning and cognitive development are complex processes. In this chapter, I will introduce and highlight some of the key issues surrounding research into language and the development of cognition in the early years. This chapter does not aim to provide an exhaustive review of the literature on these topics, which is vast. However the ways in which we learn are relevant to the issue of language and social disadvantage that forms the focus of this volume. This chapter also aims to emphasise the interaction between these often theoretically separated areas of development and discusses this in the context of typical and atypical development.
