Abstract
In September 2001, the School of Engineering at the University of Manchester adopted problem-based learning as the primary teaching method for its undergraduate programmes. This paper describes the structure of the new course, provides examples of the problems that the students have been tackling and also gives some observations that have been made following the successful completion of the first year of this course.
