Abstract

The study of the γ in inertia friction welded Alloy 720Li in the as-welded and two different PWHT conditions was presented. The high energy synchrotron diffraction measurements revealed that in the as-welded condition, the HAZ was depleted in γ with a trough observed at about 1.5 mm from the weld line. Hardness profile was recorded in order to map the variation of strength across weld line. The microstructure was studied by means of high-energy synchrotron diffraction and high resolution electron microscopy. The results show that as-welded condition exhibited slightly increased lattice misfit between γ and γ at the weld line and 2.5 m from it, which seems to increase the strength of the material.
