Abstract
The CHILDES system comprises a standardized format for the transcription of children's linguistic interactions, a set of analysis programs, and a database of child language corpora contributed by the wider research community. The system was developed in 1984 by Brian MacWhinney and Catherine Snow and since then has revolutionized the way that research is carried out in the child language research community. This article outlines the main aspects of the system and considers new developments and how they will impact the research community.
