Abstract
Progressive respiratory disease is responsible for much of the morbidity and most deaths in cystic fibrosis. Improved care has resulted in current survival into the third decade of life. By the year 2000 there will be 6000 patients with cystic fibrosis in the United Kingdom, with equal numbers of adult and paediatric patients. Patients should have access to a regional centre, either directly or through some kind of shared care.
