Abstract

Cattierite (CoS2) specimens from the type locality contain disulfides deposited in the sequence pyrite (\lt;0.9 percent Co) → cobaltiferous pyrite (15-20 percent Co) → cattierite (3.5-6 percent Fe and 2-8 percent Ni). Cattierite formation was accompanied by deposition of a Ni-rich carrollite (Co1.78 Fe0.02 Ni0.62 Cu0.59 S4) which extends the range of known thiospinel compositions.
