Abstract

Manchester Business School (MBS) in association with IACCM is proposing to launch a suite of programmes including a specialised MBA for Commercial Executives, delivered using blended (distance) learning. To ensure that these programmes meet the requirements of the commercial and contract management community, and engender appropriate skills and abilities, a global survey of IACCM’s worldwide membership was conducted in March 2008, to obtain their views on the proposed content of the MBA programme. The results of the survey presented in this paper generally validate the proposed content of the MBA for Commercial Executives; they establish that the specific commercial modules (subject areas) are regarded as highly relevant to the C&CM function, while the core MBA modules are considered to be relevant. Importantly, the content of the MBA is found to be appropriate for delegates irrespective of their global location or C&CM function, that is, whether they support the demand, supply or both (supply and demand) sides of organisations. The paper also categorizes 40 skills and abilities, based on their importance to the C&CM function and establishes relationships between these items and the proposed content of the MBA programme. It also confirms the perceived importance of negotiation, communication, problem solving and working in teams to the C&CM function.
