Abstract
In many places, there have been attempts to develop community-focused schools. These are schools that make their human resources and facilities available to local families and communities, and/or that attract community resources on to the school site in order better to meet the needs of their students. Such schools operate in widely different ways and on the basis of fundamentally different assumptions about the purpose of schooling. It seems that they can have a particular impact in areas facing disadvantage, though this might be greater if their work formed part of wider-area strategies. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
