Abstract

The estimation of atmospheric emissions is a key component of an air quality management plan. As part of ongoing research into air quality management in the Greater Manchester conurbation, a spatially disaggregated emissions inventory of major pollutants is being produced. This will estimate emissions from major point, line and area sources to a resolution of 1km × 1km for Greater Manchester and 5km × 5km for the remainder of the north west region. This paper presents the preliminary results from the GIS application of the estimation procedure to three administrative districts of Greater Manchester. The various data sources used are given and the methods utilised to estimate emissions discussed. Finally, the context for future work is shown with an indication of the means by which the procedure and resultant estimates could be improved.
