Considerations in the use of yield asymmetries for the analysis of internal stresses in metal matrix composites

    Abstract

Experimental and analytical difficulties associated with the interpretation of the Bauschinger effect are investigated. These include problems associated with obtaining the large strains required to measure any permanent softening unequivocally. In this context, the specific circumtances under which permanent softenig can be used as an experimental measure of the effect are delineated, as are those in which it would be misleading. The difficulties in obtaining reliable data from metal matrix composites with this type of test generally, whatever experimental measure is used, are emphasized. © 1992.
