Abstract
Lowest-order cranking about a principal axis breaks down for a system with non-zero (J z)
along its symmetry axis. Such a system should be cranked about an axis at an angle to the
symmetry axis. This can be understood in terms of the Berry phases, which acts like the field
of a magnetic monopole. Possible applications are discussed.
