Abstract
Breast cancer is a common disease, with up to 5% thought to be due to inherited gene mutations. Services for surveillance of women at increased genetic risk of breast cancer have been evolving throughout Europe as a result of evidence-based medicine and increasing public awareness. The Biomed 2 Demonstration Project was established to evaluate these services, in order to propose an "ideal model" for management of individuals at increased risk of breast cancer. Data was collected by questionnaire as part of this project from centres in 10 European Union and 17 non-European Union countries, including funding, clinic organization, referral patterns, risk assessment and screening for breast and other related cancers. Many similarities in provision of serviced for women at increased risk of breast cancer were evident in those countries studied. There were some differences in certain aspects of management such as prophylactic mastectomy. With increasing population mobility and communications, it appears appropriate to have a consensus throughout Europe for the management of high risk individuals.
