Abstract
This essay analyses the transformation of the profile of the individuals who served as governors of Veracruz from the late 17th to the mid-18th centuries. It shows that these changes replicate the appointment of experienced soldiers to government posts in strategic provinces in both Spain and America. The article further demonstrates that these transformation went hand in hand with formal modifications of the administrative and institutional status of the office of governor of Veracruz, a process which also has parallels in other parts of Spain and Spanish America.
