Abstract
Mostly based on video interviews of Holocaust survivors provided by the Shoah Visual Foundation (USC Los Angeles), this article describes for the first time the search for individual corpses of Holocaust victims in Poland and Romania by survivors. When found, those corpses were exhumed with makeshift means and transferred to the local Jewish cemetery. The article considers the conditions of the search and of exhumations and the motivations and legitimation (including the religious ones).
