Abstract

This paper focuses on the characterisation of CF3I-CO2 gas mixtures as an insulation medium in gas insulated switchgear and lines. The deposited by-products of a 30-70% CF3I-CO2 gas mixture are experimentally investigated using aluminium electrodes in order to determine the impact of breakdown within the gas mixture. An imaging microscope and scanning electron microscope are utilized to further investigate the deposited by-products of flashover in CF3I gas mixtures. This paper gives the results of such analysis and discusses the nature of CF3I deposited by-products in high voltage equipment when CF3I is used as an insulant.
