Design for Testability of Printed Circuit Board Assemblies

    A design advisory system, known as design for in-circuit test advisory (DICTA) system, was developed which aims to integrate physical testability considerations into the design environment at the printed circuit board (PCB) layout stage. The DICTA modelling and analysis environment was implemented using ICAD, a knowledge based engineering software tool that provides a graphical browser which displays the product tree structure and associated design geometry. The DICTA prototype demonstrates the benefits of linking a critiquing system to a graphic rule explanation and reporting facility to increase designer's awareness of downstream issues.
