Design study of a gate valve with respect to maintainability

    A common problem experienced in the process industries is leakage through gate valves. This paper proposes a gate valve design which features a novel arrangement of replaceable seats which are not held in place by fasteners. A 100mm nominal bore valve has been modified to the design proposed and has been subjected to timed maintenance trials followed by pressure testing. This experimental work has demonstrated that the design proposed is sound and that the valve seats can be replaced quickly with a minimum skill requirement. The valve has the potential to reduce plant downtime in applications where seat wear is a frequent problem. (A)
