Abstract
A technique is presented that allows computation of established spatial domain formation statistics using the Fast Fourier Transform. The technique provides the precise relationship between the characterisation of formation by the variance or coefficient of variation of local grammage at a range of scales and that given by the Power Spectrum. The use of the technique to compute the variance of local grammage at noninteger multiples of the pixel resolution in discussed along with the use of such data to provide improved estimates of the mean floc diameter. The technique described allows rapid computation of variances and is suitable for implementation in on-line instrumentation.
