note = "This peer-reviewed chapter forms part of a volume edited by, and including contributions from, leading figures in the current theorisation of English as a lingua franca (ELF) and the educational application of ELF research. The volume advocates, and exemplifies how, an ELF approach can be used to reposition the globally dominant, but increasingly critiqued, approach to English language teaching, i.e. English as a foreign language (EFL). Our chapter innovatively brings together the educational potential of the long-established discussion of teaching English for Intercultural Communication (EIC) with the more recent focus on ELF-aware teaching. The chapter extends my earlier EIC contribution to an earlier edited volume (2016) on ELF with the same publishing house. It does with a particular focus on the Thai EFL sector as underpinned by an analysis of language policy documentation for Thailand as part of the ASEAN region where debates regarding the role of English are currently strong. The chapter then illustrates how this analysis can inform principled evaluation and adaptation of EFL material for ELF purposes. The volume intentionally marries fresh theoretical thinking with a distance-learning dimension in order to maximise the likely impact of this theorised practice with TESOL scholars and practitioners worldwide.
