    Abstract

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the development of a Value-Driven Design framework and illustrate how economic theory can enable rational program level decision- making within the civil aviation industry. Surplus Value theory is applied within the framework as an objective function to assess business strategies and engineering solutions. The framework addresses a number of assumptions inherit within the surplus value theory and compares them through a middle of the market case study. It employs several models to characterise the behaviour of the key players within aviation and incorporates them together through a multi-stage game. The paper illustrates the methodology and modelling approach of the framework, and the key outcome demonstrates how the framework evaluates designs and select scenarios which represent the best value.
