    Abstract

The expansion of vortex-free, rotating Bose-Einstein condensates after their release from a rotating anisotropic trap was observed. Conservation of angular momentum and constraint of irrotational flow resulted in expansion of the condensate in a different way to the one released from a static trap. Results indicated an evidence of purely irrotational velocity field with a superfluid.
