Abstract

One significant trend at the D.I.T.B. in recent times has been the increased need for statistical information on distributive manpower. Though it is true that there may not have been a corresponding need for strict statistical precision, data are, now, regularly, being sought, which are more varied than in the past - and more detailed. One indication of the new appetite for statistics can be found in the form of the Board's latest Statutory Return (for levy 10) which, compared to earlier SR's, is considerably more demanding of the employers who receive it. And yet the information collected by the D.I.T.B. on forms like the S.R. has been found barely adequate for the Board s work and quite inadequate for the Manpower Service Commission’s. Like all I.T.B.'s the Board is responsible to the M.S.C. for its strategic policies, Including that of data collection, and the Commission has decided that much more comprehensive statistical information is needed " in order to form a national view of developments in the board sector as a necessary input to the commission's manpower and strategic planning ........" It is with this background that the report was written and will hopefully be found useful. Not least, because of the fact, that -with the exception of the Statistical Office of European Communities (see section 5) - there has been very little official data, on manpower, in distribution, published, during the last year.
