Effect of Cutting Tools and Machine Tools in the Energy Footprint in Turning Operations

Research output: Contribution to journalConference articlepeer-review

Abstract

The selection of cutting tools and machine tools in machining operations has traditionally been based on reducing cutting cost and/or maximising production rate and technological considerations within the constraints of product specifications and resource capability. Strategies to reduce energy demand in manufacturing processes are becoming necessary due to the growing concern about carbon emissions and electricity prices. In this research, cutting tools with different tool life exponents and machine tools with different basic power were investigated to find the best combination for minimising energy footprint in turning operation. The results allow the identification of the optimum combination of cutting tools and machine tools for energy footprint minimisation. This timely research contributes towards the identification of conditions for energy smart manufacturing.
