Abstract
The developments in the field of designing and testing an electromagnetic sensor to visualize the steel flow pattern in the tundish pouring nozzle are presented. The concept of detecting flow pattern changes in an SEN using the electromagnetic technique and the development of a functioning prototype are also discussed. A typical electromagnetic sensing system consists of the sensor array, conditioning electronics and data handling equipment. Tests are carried out at Metal Process Control AB (MPC) in Sweden to study the effect of three flow patterns on a single receiver coil. The prototype sensor comprises of a single transmitter coil with three pairs of balanced aluminum frame. The physical and mathematical modeling show that the SEN doesn't always run full. The electromagnetic sensor can detect casting operation such as alumna flushes and ladle changes. It is shown that the changes in flow pattern are not necessarily linked to changes in process condition.
