Abstract

The nature of power systems is rapidly changing with the emerging penetration of renewables and other sources of the energy. These changes will lead to the insecurity of power supply by the use of offline security assessment and planning. Therefore, the increased uncertainty of the systems can be overcome by using adaptive solutions to ensure adequate system security and introduction to the measurement technologies. The objective of the research presented in this dissertation is to understand under frequency load shedding scheme mechanisms and to propose a new "adaptive under frequency load shedding scheme" that is based on practical evaluations of benefits against weaknesses of implemented schemes found in the literature. The new scheme proposed changes time delays on the basis of Rate Of Change Of Frequency and adapts the load shedding amounts according to it.The research presented in this dissertation includes design and implementation of different under frequency load shedding schemes found in the literature, creation of the new adaptive under frequency load shedding scheme and comparison with the existing schemes. Furthermore, schemes from the literature and the new proposed scheme have been tested by using data measured by synchronized measurement units installed in the laboratory.
