Abstract

Extraction of metals from natural ores and its subsequent processing involves huge energy consumption. The high usage of steel in particular means more efficient use of it could save energy at all stages of its production cycle. This paper explores an innovative method for more economical recycling of steel by reforming the machining swarf without the need for highly energy inefficient re-refining or recasting. Machining swarf is instead reformed using the laser assisted metal deposition technique. Analysis of reformed clads in terms of geometry, microstructural and physical properties shows encouraging results, thus indicating this technique could, with further development, reduce demand for raw material and the energy required to extract and refine it.
