Abstract
A tubular zeolite NaA membrane, prepd. on a C/ZnO2 support, was tested for the removal of water from aq. isopropanol and aq. ethanol mixts., in both pervaporation and vapor permeation modes. The esterification of lactic acid with ethanol was studied in a batch reactor, without catalyst and with p-toluenesulfonic acid as catalyst. The use of a zeolite A vapor permeation membrane to remove water generated by the reaction gave substantially enhanced yields of product, compared to control expts. carried out without the membrane.
