EPSRC project report: Product quality control of fluidised bed dryers with tomographic imaging and online process modelling

    Abstract

    This technical report is about mathematical modelling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) measurement and control of a batch fluidised bed dryer. To investigate the dynamic solids drying process in the fluidised bed dryer, mathematical models have been developed and a CFD software package (Fluent V6.1) has been used to simulate the heat and mass transfer between the gas and solids phases. To optimise the ECT sensor design, COMSOL has been used to carry out 3D simulation. A new approach (patented) has been developed for online solids moisture measurement based on ECT and used with the fluidised bed dryer. Based on online solids moisture measurement, real-time feedback control has been implemented and the batch fluidised bed drying process has been optimised for the first time. The results from batch drying processes with online solids moisture measurement and feedback control are given and compared with neither online solids moisture measurement nor feedback control. The operation efficiency, in particular the thermal efficiency, has been investigated, showing the possibility of real-time control and optimisation of the batch fluidised bed drying process based on online solids moisture measurement using ECT. To investigate the effect of air distributor on the dynamics of the fluidised bed dryer, an adaptor like Venturi has been designed and used for distributed control. Some preliminary results with distributed control have been obtained.
