Abstract

Load modeling is an important part of power system analysis and simulations. Load characteristics, being uncertain and time varying, are difficult to obtain and very often a standard constant-impedance load is used. This in turn may lead to erroneous assessment of system stability. One way of obtaining the load characteristics relies on extracting them from field measurements. In this measurement-based approach an appropriate identification method is used to estimate the parameters of an assumed load model. This paper investigates the possibility of using this approach with the measurements taken by phasor measurement units (PMUs) and demonstrates the influence of a PMU on the measured load response. Three different C37.118 compliant PMUs have been tested.
