    Abstract

Under the EU FP6 research project 'More Microgrids', a general European platform of database and expert know-how for planning and evaluation of Microgrids has been established. Through extensive simulations and field-tests, key technological enablers and market signals for promotion of Microgrid have been identified. The paper introduces the experiences gained from this platform, providing some key indications about modelling aspects needed to carry out comprehensive Microgrid studies, the main benefits that can arise from Microgrid operation, and changes that need to take place in terms of comercial and regulatory framework in order to enable large-scale Microgrid deployment. High-lights, benefits, barriers and enabling factors based on the experiences gained within the project a 'Microgrids Roadmap' is developed A Microgrid is capable of overcoming conflicting interests of different stakeholders and achieving a global socio-economic optimum in operation of distributed energy sources. In particular, Microgrids not only represent a viable option to increase the share of dispersed and renewable generation and to increase reliability of supply, but may also provide additional environmental and economic benefits when compared to the case of uncoordinated operation of DER units. However, proper operation and planning of a Microgrid requires knowledge and simulation of its actual operating conditions, above all because different planning decisions (especially referring to DG/RES penetration level) will lead to different levels of potential benefits that the Microgrid could bring about. Suitable regulatory and policy actions need to be implemented to drive optimal coordinated DG and Microgrids deployment and to enable all the potential benefits brought by Microgrid to be provided.
