Abstract

This workshop is based on longitudinal, multi-method evaluations of collective leadership across a range of public sectors, but with a specific focus on policing and health services. Alongside the research, a public leadership framework was developed through a series of seminars that sought to identify and respond to the challenges presented to public leaders within the context of reform. Following on from the series an edited book was published which built on this framework (Brookes & Grint, 2010). The emergent framework encompasses the notion of shared (inter-organisational) and distributed (intra- organisational) leadership and thus emphasizes the importance of horizontal, vertical and diagonal leadership.
