Abstract

The results of tests on new multielement ceramic coatings based on (Ti,Al)N and Ti(B,N) deposited by plasma-assisted physical vapour deposition are reported. The work follows on from earlier studies based on standardized test procedures and now includes model cutting tests. The paper emphasizes the markedly different tribological behaviour of these coatings depending on the contact conditions—even on different faces of the same tool. The need to further develop such coatings for specific contact conditions is therefore highlighted.
