Abstract

Isolation of a new β-lactam-containing metabolite, from incubation of the three deuteriated tripeptides (1b-d) with isopencillin N synthase (IPNS) has provided evidence of an epoxide type intermediate; a unified mechanism is proposed for the formation of products by IPNS from unsaturated precursors.
