Abstract
This is the first truly source-critical edition of a major work by a major nineteenth-century composer, drawing on a number of original sources hitherto either unknown or unexplored, together with a plethora of contextual material explicating the history of the work's genesis leading to a fuller understanding of its historical meaning. Includes a 12,000-word introduction, a 33,000-word critical apparatus, and (for the first time) a full transcription of all sketches and drafts of the work.
Series 1, Volume 7 of the Leipzig Edition of the Works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Complete works edited by Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften.
