"Fetch me a picture representing triumph or similar": Classification based navigation and retrieval for picture archives

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

    Abstract

The various aspects of retrieval and classification based navigation for image archives are discussed. The STARCH (Structured Terminologies for ARCHives) project proposes a knowledge based system for the retrieval of semantic metadata of a picture collection, by using an ontology and a controlled vocabulary represented using a description logic (DL). The ontology forms an extensible conceptual classification indexing the document descriptors expressed by it. The structured representation of the DL can assist in providing more powerful environments for retrieval, through the support of browsing, navigation and the discovery of information.
