Abstract
The effective electric field due to a permanent dipole in an arbitrary Bravais lattice of polarisable non-polar molecules is expressed exactly, taking account of the different polarisability of the polar guest molecule. The asymptotic behaviour of the field at large distances from the dipole is evaluated. An interpretation is offered for the rescaled dipole moment required to give agreement with continuum dielectric theory.
