    Abstract

Planar waveguides with combined electromagnetic fields and network parameter descriptions are analyzed using the finite element (FE) method. This analysis links the field solution in the interior region of the waveguide with the modal amplitudes defined at the waveguide ports. The S-parameters are calculated by exciting each of the three ports in turn and evaluating the reflection and transmission coefficients in each case.
