Abstract
The Food Safety Act 1990 made major changes to the framework of food law in the United Kingdom. This article aims to inform the reader of the major impact of those changes and to explain the new provisions in light of the previous case law. In particular, the article concentrates on the new criminal provisions governing food safety and consumer protection, as well as the defences available under the new Act. New and increased powers to regulate are discussed, with attention being paid to the most controversial issues, such as how the regulations will relate to irradiated food.
