Abstract

This entry addresses the current state of gendered hate online focusing on the linkages between a broad‐ranging and loosely grouped collection of masculinist online “communities” known colloquially as the manosphere and the alt‐right. Of particular concern are links between these groups and increasing gendered violence along with the movement of gendered hate from fringe groups into mainstream social, and political culture. This movement has been enabled by the development of internet media through the technological affordances of social media and the wide proliferation of Wi‐Fi and smartphone technologies. The academic literature on this topic is limited and spread across a broad range of disciplines making it difficult for nonspecialists to find. This entry uses both popular and academic sources to provide an overview of the relationships between these online cultures and their linkages to gender, media, and communication. Thus we provide an overview of and context for forms and practices of gendered hate as they currently occur online including misogyny directed at women, the feminization of out‐group men, and vitriol aimed especially at feminists of either gender.
