Abstract
Tawakkol, Bhagat, and Sharma examine how states, non-state organisations, and the private sector unequally govern displaced populations in the context of contemporary neoliberalism, particularly in light of recurring financial crises and resulting waves of austerity at international, national, and municipal levels. The chapter argues that there are contradictions in the discursive and the material, indicating tensions between official narratives framing policy debates on displaced groups and the actual practices of capitalist governance, paired with societal unwillingness to accept and accommodate economic, environmental, and conflict-based refugees.
