    Abstract

In this article we present a general introduction to the field of graphene and in particular of graphene-based composites. The opportunities for achieving novel high performance composite materials with enhanced properties are highlighted and the challenges to be overcome discussed. As the application of graphene as a nanofiller in composite materials is imminent, the availability of processable graphene sheets in large quantities seems essential to the success of exploiting composite and other applications of graphene. In addition, our work on the synthesis of electroactive graphene-polyaniline composites is presented. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.
