Abstract
In this paper, I discuss ‘hearing touch’ in See, Sea, an exploration of memory and time (Sentler 2013). This durational installation by choreographer Susan Sentler comprises films, photographs, dance by Irina Baldini, and music composed by Ronen Kozokaro with a live performance element. I argue that in the films, touch is evoked through sound as well as vision. Seeing, hearing and touching are linked through shared ‘effort qualities’ of weight, space, time and flow (Laban
and Lawrence 1947) and visual and aural images of water and sea draw on experiential associations with touch that are linked with haptic perception of the filmic medium.
